Sernftal Enterprises is named for one alpine valley in the canton of Glarus. Three villages sit in it: Engi, Matt, and Elm.
Our family arrived there from Gams, in the Rhine Valley, in the late 1500s. The earliest we can point to was born in Elm around 1538.
Then the valley split
In the early 1840s the crops failed and the canton went hungry. Glarus formed an emigration society, offered loans against land nobody had seen, and on 16 April 1845 a hundred and ninety-three people left for America.
A hundred and eight of them arrived in Wisconsin on 15 August, four months and five days later, and founded New Glarus — three years before Wisconsin was a state. Among the original colonists was the family of Oswald Bäbler, a slate miner from Matt — the next village down our valley. More Bäblers followed from Elm in the 1850s. Their descendants are still in Green County.
One branch stayed in the valley. The other built a town in Wisconsin. This practice comes from both.
What happened at Elm
On 11 September 1881, the mountain above the village came down in three waves.

It was not an act of nature. Elm's slate was unusually fine, and in demand once schooling became compulsory across the canton. In 1878 the village decided to quarry it themselves rather than license the work out, and men without mining experience went into the mountain after it.
Inside, earlier quarrymen had left columns of rock standing — pillars holding up the roof of the workings. The slate in those pillars was the best in the mountain. From 1879 the villagers began cutting into them.
Two years later the mountain failed. The geologist Albert Heim and the village pastor Ernst Buss published their account the same year; it remains one of the first thoroughly documented landslides caused by people.
Why we tell it
A business rarely fails from the thing it was watching.
We're careful with that story — a hundred and fourteen people died, in a village our family comes from. We tell it because it is the clearest description we know of the failure we are hired to prevent.
The pillars looked like waste. They sat there doing nothing visible and held the best material in the mountain. Removing them paid immediately. The bill arrived two years later, all at once, and could not be undone.
Businesses do this constantly, and it almost never looks reckless at the time. A service gets priced to win the bid and quietly runs below cost for three years. Maintenance is deferred one more season. The estimator who caught the errors is the salary that gets cut.
Our whole job is telling the difference between waste and a pillar.
Who you are working with
A practice, not an agency. The work is done by Kody Bäbler, who came out of underwriting — pricing national health-plan accounts, including a contract carrying a billion dollars of top-line revenue, and commercial real estate and SBA lending before that. Deals where being wrong was not survivable.
Deliberately small, American-owned, and structured so the person who reads your numbers is the person who builds the fix.

Information we collect
We collect only what you choose to send us. If you complete the contact form, we receive the name, email address, business name, area of interest, and message you enter. If you book a call, our scheduling provider receives the name, email address, and any details you add.
Our host records standard server logs — IP address, browser type, pages requested, and timestamps — as part of delivering the site and protecting it from abuse.
We do not run advertising trackers, and we do not maintain analytics profiles of individual visitors.
How we use it
To reply to you, to schedule and prepare for a call, and to carry out work you engage us for. That is the entire list. We do not sell personal information, we do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising, and we do not add you to a marketing list because you contacted us.
Third parties that process data for us
Running a website means relying on service providers. The ones that can see your information are:
- Our web host — serves the site and processes contact-form submissions.
- Our scheduling provider — receives the details you enter when booking a call.
- Google Fonts — typefaces load from Google's servers, which means Google receives your IP address when the page loads.
Each acts on our instructions for the purpose described. None is authorised to use your information for its own marketing.
Cookies and Do Not Track
This site sets no advertising or analytics cookies. Because we do not track visitors across other websites, there is nothing for a Do Not Track signal to switch off; we honour it by default.
Your choices
You may ask us what personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Email sernftalenterprises@gmail.com and we will respond within thirty days. We will not treat you differently for exercising any of these rights.
California residents have these rights under state law. We extend the same handling to everyone who contacts us, wherever they live.
Retention
Enquiries that do not become engagements are deleted once the conversation has clearly ended. Records connected to actual engagements are kept as long as the business relationship and our tax and accounting obligations require, then deleted.
Client confidentiality
Separate from this notice, and stricter: the substance of client work is confidential. Pricing, margins, financial records, customer lists, and the problems a client is working through are not discussed, published, or used as examples without that client's written permission. We do not name clients on this site or in proposals unless they have agreed to it. Where an engagement calls for a mutual non-disclosure agreement, we are glad to sign yours.
Children
This site is intended for business owners and operators. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 16.

The First Light mark
The logomark depicts the Martinsloch, a natural rock window in the Tschingelhörner ridge above Elm. Twice a year, sunlight passes through it and strikes the village church tower in the minutes before sunrise.
